Australian Responsibility to Protect Fund

Background

The Responsibility to Protect principle was unanimously adopted by world leaders at the 2005 World Summit. In August 2008, the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith, announced that Australia would strengthen its support for the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle by establishing a $2million fund that would underpin work on the concept in Australia and overseas. The Fund is to be made available on a competitive basis to Australian and international research institutions and non-governmental organisations, for projects or research which will materially contribute to making R2P a reliable factor in international crisis handling.  The Fund will focus on two Priority Themes identified by the Foreign Minister during a visit to the United Nations in September 2008.
