Dr Mubashar Hasan

Dr. Mubashar Hasan is a research fellow at the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. He is also an adjunct research fellow at the Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative (HADRI) at Western Sydney University. A survivor of torture and enforced disappearance in Bangladesh, Dr. Hasan is a Bangladeshi-Australian known for advocating for refugee rights in Australia and human rights in Bangladesh.
He is widely sought after by international media for commentary on Bangladesh. His quotes and interviews have appeared in The New York Times, The Economist Magazine, Time Magazine, The Guardian, SBS News and ABC News, among others. His television appearances include ABC News, BBC News, Channel 9, Sky News Australia and Al Jazeera.
He has authored and co-edited multiple books, including The Long Reach of the Strong Arm: Evolving Forms of Transnational Authoritarianism (Palgrave, open access, 2026), Masks of Authoritarianism (Palgrave, 2022), Islam and Politics in Bangladesh (Palgrave, 2020) and Radicalization in South Asia (Sage, 2019). He has also published more than fifteen journal articles — including in Q1 journals — and book chapters.
Previously, he has consulted for and advised the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, the US Institute of Peace, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, and the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect.
