Members of the Asia Pacific Partnership for Atrocity Prevention (APPAP) have released a statement expressing grave concern over the military coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021. The coup saw State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint detained along with other officials in the elected civilian government.
This interference by Myanmar's military into the country's democratic processes, along with its previous record of atrocities against civilians including the Rohingya minority, mean there are increased chances of violence and atrocity crimes within the country.
APPAP members call upon Myanmar and the international community to uphold the Responsibility to Protect and ensure protection of Myanmar's populations from atrocity crimes.
