Building ASEAN Consensus on Myanmar and Capacity for R2P in Cambodia

17 Nov 2023
September was a busy month for R2P in Cambodia, with a capacity-building workshop and a national dialogue to build ASEAN consensus in Myanmar taking place.

R2P Capacity-building
On 16 September 2023, the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP) and the Svay Rieng University (SRU) co-organized a capacity-building training on the “Importance of Responsibility to Protect (R2P)”. The event sought to raise awareness of key concepts of R2P and demonstrate its relevance in Cambodia and the broader region.

The one-day training covered two sessions: an introductory session on R2P and an interactive session outlining how it might be applied to the Cambodian context.

The ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar

On Wednesday, 27 September 2023, the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP) and the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia co-organized a national dialogue on “The ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar: Lessons Learnt and Ways Forward” at Sunway Hotel, Phnom Penh.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including diplomatic corps from the United Nations, France, Russia, and China, think tanks, members of civil society and university students. The aim of the event was to discuss ways forward regarding ASEAN's efforts to address the situation in Myanmar.

The key takeaway  was that the Five-Point Consensus needed to be recalibrated to include more effective actions. For further information on the dialogue, see our Spotlight Report (PDF, 801KB).
