Human Rights, Mass Atrocities and the Struggle for International Justice

Wed 22 Mar 2023 5:00pm6:30pm

Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being. There are no exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, that may be used as a justification of torture. The 1984 Convention against Torture lets no one off the hook – neither the torturers themselves, nor the policy-makers, nor the public officials who define the policy or give the orders.

Today in 2023 there are more than a 100 million people around the world displaced by persecution, conflict and atrocities — a disturbingly high number of the forcibly displaced are torture survivors.
