About Being the difference: a primer for states wishing to prevent atrocity crimes

Co-hosted by ANU's Diplomacy Forum and UQ's Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, this roundtable will host Dr Kate Ferguson (Co-Executive Director, Protection Approaches) as she presents her recent report on building state capacity for atrocity prevention.

Entitled 'Being the difference', the report calls for moving the R2P concept out from the United Nations and into the architecture of the state, to be more consciously adopted and invoked by civil society.

The speakers include Dr Kate Ferguson and Professor Alex Bellamy. Kate is the Co-Executive Director of Protection Approaches, and she has over a decade of experience advocating for atrocity prevention and a prevention-first approach in UK foreign policy. Alex is a Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland and the Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.

The roundtable will be moderated by Dr Cecilia Jacob, Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at ANU, where she focuses on civilian protection, mass atrocity prevention and the norms of international human protection.

The event will take place over Zoom, and registration is required, either by clicking here or using the link above.
