Dr. Adams was Executive Director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P). Established in 2008, the GCR2P is the world’s leading research and advocacy organization for advancing the international norm of the Responsibility to Protect at the United Nations and beyond. Dr. Adams worked extensively with governments and civil society organizations in South Africa, East Timor, Rwanda, and elsewhere.

He is currently the President and CEO of the Center for Victims of Torture, the world's largest organization providing treatment to torture survivors, as well as advocating for the eradication of torture globally. 

Dr. Adams is the author of numerous books and academic articles with a focus on international conflict. He has also been published in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, The Australian, Huffington Post, International Herald Tribune, News24 (South Africa), O Estado de S. Paulo (Brazil), Los Angeles Times and many others.
