Indonesian Hate Speech and Disinformation Training

13 Jun 2023

APR2P, in conjunction with APPAP partner the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Indonesia, launched a workshop in Bandung, Indonesia on the prevention of hate speech, disinformation and incitement to violence.

Attendees from the Indonesian government, civil society and the media learned how hate speech and incitement to violence contribute to the commission of atrocity crimes.

Participants discussed ways hate speech in society, especially hate speech communicated through social media, could be countered and developed 'best practice' approaches for doing so.

The course was attended by Mr George Okoth-Obo, the UN Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect, who spoke about hate speech and its relationship to R2P.

The course was reported in an article in Kompas, an Indonesian newspaper. An informal translation of this article can be read here (PDF, 2.1 MB).

More information can be found in the Spotlight article here (PDF, 622KB), or from the 'Training' tab on the Hate Speech and Incitement page, along with more research APR2P conducts in this field.
