Between August 24 and 27, 2023, the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) conducted a hate speech training workshop aimed at Malaysian youth. This workshop was an expansion of the program initiated in 2021.
The workshop sought to recognise the critical role that young people play in countering hate speech online, empowering youth to play a more prominant role in atrocity prevention in the region.
The multi-day workshop covered the important distinction between hate speech and freedom of expression, and the connection between hate speech and atrocity crimes. On the third day, participants devised strategies for campaigning against hate speech.
The workshop was a great success, with many participants reporting that they had gained a better understanding of the role of hate speech and its connection to atrocites, and, most critically, their role in combatting it.
